UNN STUDENT COMMITS SUICIDE AFTER DROPPING SUICIDE NOTE ON FACEBOOK
Depression and hopelessness! The suicide trend among students of Nigerian Universities is becoming worrisome. Sad enough, most of the victims are young lads born in the early 90s or late 90s and the millennial.
In just a month, over 10 cases of suicide has been reported from different campuses ranging from; UNN, UNIJOS, ABU, UNIPORT, Ilorin, UI and JAMBITES. What should we blame? What could be the cause?
- Academic stress?
- Anti-social nature of the society?
- Or break-up trauma?
None of the above listed is far-fetched.
The government, schools, education unions and boards, NGOs and the general community should start doing something about this ugly trend.
The last time it was a JAMB candidate who committed suicide (by drinking sniper) because of low exam score. Today it was a final year student of the prestigious University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) named Chukwuemeka Akachi.
Chukwuemeka was said to be in the department of English and literal studies of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). As at the time of writing this post, the reasons for his action (taking his life) has not been ascertained. It was reported that he posted a suicide note on his facebook timeline but his friends didn’t take him to be serious until he gulped down two bottles of sniper.
Just so you know, sniper is an insecticide commonly used in Nigeria to kill insects and rats.
Emeka was rushed to the school’s medical center immediately by close friends when they discovered what happened to him. Probably for first aid treatment before been taken to University of Nigeria, Nsukka Teaching Hospital but unfortunately he died. RIP to him.
According to close source, the said student has been depressed and suicidal for quite a long time which he communicates through his #SadPoems. However he is a very jovial person who masks his his sadness so one will never suspect he is under some pressure.
This and related cases of university students committing suicide got people talking. While some people consider the trend unhealthy, blaming the media that posting of such incident (by the media) will only make depressed students who have been considering suicide see it as an easy thing to do – and a way out.
Others blame parents for over pampering their wards by providing them of whatever thing they need including some unimportant things. This makes them see life as bed of roses, so if things happen to change in the future and they get exposed to little unusual pressure, they find it very depressing and difficult to adapt.
Yet there is another who calls for a ban on sniper or at least ban it’s sale near students residence saying that is has killed more humans than rats. Precisely, scores of Nigerian University students. Since most of them use that insecticide to commit suicide. Banning it will to some extent put a check on it.
